Wstępniak K. Radziszewskiego:

OMG, a woman on the cover of the Fagazine? Yep, it is our face of Czechoslovakia. But let’s start from the beginning. As you may have noticed, for some time now DIK has been in-terested in archives, history, and the search for queer tropes of the past. While working on the previous issue, BEFORE `89, we travelled across almost all of Central and Eastern Europe. Czechoslovakia, however, seemed to me like the most tolerant country in the region, and the least unknown, and that’s why I neglected it a bit at the time. Now I have decided to issue a monograjh. Therefore, to clarify: Czecho-slovakia (Czech and Slovak: Ceskoslovensko, Cesko-Slovensko) was a sovereign state in Central Europe that existed from October 1918, when it declared its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, until its peaceful dissolution into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on 1 January 1993.

I set out for Prague with the conviction that I’d find a place devoid of God’s presence, an atheistic world of rationality and hedonistic perdition. And good, cheap beer. In a way this was true, but not entirely. Shortly after arriving, I met Professor Martin C. Putna of Charles University in Prague, the author of the book Homosexualita v dejinach Ceske kultury (Homosexuality in the History of Czech Culture.) To my question, whether is anything special distinguishing Czech gays, he replied that it’s probably their weakness for the Catholic religion. And in-deed, as you will learn from this issue, the fascination is real. The most significant queers in the cultural milieu are con-servatives, monarchists, and aristocrats, fascinated by the religious entourage. But don’t worry, you’ll also read about cruising spots, toilets, baths, clubs and sex. So read, look.
