Książka Carela Tomsa „HITLER’S FORTRESS ISLANDS”.

Anglojęzyczna książka o niemieckiej okupacji angielskich wysp na Kanale La Manche.

Nota wydawnicza:

Throughout the Second World War the Nazi jackboot was only planted once on British soil: in the Channel Islands. And within months these beautiful islands were turned into a massively organised and impregnable fortress. Today all that remains of Hitler’s stronghold are overgrown gun-emplacements, decaying bunkers and a scattering of gaunt towers. But they are a legacy of half a decade of despair and subversion which the islanders suffered at the hands of the Germans.

The men of the islands were forced to work at insane speed to finish the immense programme born of a fanatical desire to surround the territory with walls of steel. It proved to be one of Hitler’s greatest follies, for the gigantic installations against invasion were never used ; the vast and brilliantly designed coastal defences were never seriously attacked.

The grim story of the building of Hitler’s futile fortress is told in revealing text and by contemporary photographs, most of them never previously published. They were taken by the Islanders themselves at great personal risk of imprison-ment, punishment and even death.
