Książka z 1948 roku pt. „SELECTED POEMS OF ROBERT HERRICK„.
Wiersze w angielskim oryginale. Wybrał i wstępem poprzedził Jack Lindsay.
Nota wydawnicza o książce:
Robert Herrick wrote his light and delicate poems at the close of the era of Elizabethan lyricism, and when he published Hesperides and Noble Numbers in 1649, they were received without enthusiasm. His airy and fanciful verses seemed of minor importance against the work of writers of such intellectual and religious fervour as Donne and his followers. A new movement was rising, and Herrick was out of date.
But it is those very qualities to which his contemporaries objected that make us oppreciate him so much to-day. As Mr. Lindsay says in his introduction to this selection of Herrick’s poems, „in his work we find the Elizabethan Lyric brought to lustrous consummation, in all purity and fullness of form … the perfect union of the literary lyric with the sturdy life of the earth, its songs and customs and indomitable renewals. Julia, the sweet ghost of scents and jewel-lights, strolls naturally among the youngsters of the May of the year; daydream and folk-tradition are successfully mated.”
