Książka brytyjskiego historyka Nicholasa Bethella pt. „GOMUŁKA, HIS POLAND AND HIS COMMUNISM” – pierwsza anglojęzyczna biografia polskiego przywódcy komunistycznego, I Sekretarza PZPR w latach 1956-1970.

Pierwsze wydanie. Książka w języku angielskim.

Nota wydawnicza:

This is the first biography to appear in English of Wladyslaw Gomulka, statesman, communist and patriot, first secretary of the Polish communist party—a man who in 1956 made his name outside Poland by bringing his `satellite’ country some measure of independence from the USSR, yet in 1968 was prepared to send Polish troops to join the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in order to crush a movement very similar to the one which brought Gomulka himself to power.

This is more than just a biography; it is a history of modern Poland. When Gomulka was born, the son of a returned emigrant to the USA, Poland did not exist as an independent country. With Polish independence after World War I, he joined the illstarred first Polish communist party and was imprisoned. During the Nazi occupation which launched World War II he rose to prominence in the communist underground. He formed part of the postwar communist government but was disgraced in the dark years before Stalin’s death. Then came the promise of 1956, when he came to power by popular acclaim, and the disappointment of his rule since, a rule which has nonetheless usually been misunderstood.

Nicholas Bethell’s examination and analysis of Gomulka’s personality, of his policies and his troubled country make this book essential reading for anyone who wants a proper understanding of modern Europe.
